What is Osteopathy?Osteopaths are highly trained Allied Health Professionals who complement other medical practitioners. They specialise in the evaluation, diagnosis and management of Musculoskeletal symptoms and their relationship with other systems in the body. Osteopaths believe that everyone can benefit from a tailored, whole person approach to health. People of all ages see osteopaths, from babies to the elderly. Drugs or surgery are not part of an osteopath’s repertoire but they can refer you for other specialist intervention if necessary as they work closely with other healthcare professionals such as consultants, GPs and other Allied Health Professionals. You can expect your osteopath to take the time to understand your individual history, circumstances and unique physiology and provide a package of care that is tailored to your needs. This can include manual therapy, rehabilitation exercises, screening and general health advice. Osteopaths have a well-deserved, evidence-based reputation for expertise in the treatment of musculoskeletal conditions, such as back, neck, joint, muscle and arthritic discomfort. They often use massage techniques, stretches and mobilisations of the joints and muscles, not only for low back pain but also for hip, thigh, knee, calf, ankle, foot, shoulder, arm, elbow, wrist, hand, neck and mid back symptoms. The aim is to improve movement patterns and posture and to relieve pain and discomfort. People also visit osteopaths for a variety of other health reasons including neuromuscular conditions such as sciatica, digestive issues, headaches and migraine prevention. All UK osteopaths are registered with the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC) which ensures that all practicing osteopaths maintain the highest standards of knowledge, safety and professionalism. 30 hours per annum of continuous professional development training is mandatory to maintain these high standards Visit About Osteopathy - Institute of Osteopathy (iosteopathy.org) for more information

How many treatments will I need? This depends on many factors, such as the type and level of injury, your age, level of fitness etcetera. A full and comprehensive case history will be taken at your first visit and then the expected number of treatments for your individual needs can be discussed. If it is applicable to your condition, specific exercises and tailored advice will be provided and this can help with a speedy recovery
-
Will the treatment hurt? The treatment is not painful but can cause discomfort and some of the techniques used can be different to what you may have experienced before. You can let your osteopath know if you do not wish to have certain techniques used or if you would like a gentle treatment approach. Your osteopath will tell you what to expect and it is important to let them know if you are feeling any pain or discomfort during the treatment. A post treatment reaction is generally to be expected which can mean that you are sore for 24-48 hours after your treatment. If there are any concerns, you can email or call the clinic directly for advice and information. Our aim is to respond asap to all queries

What should I wear to the appointment? As osteopaths, we will want to observe how you move and discern where the tensions are in the body, so it may be necessary to remove some clothing. We want you to be comfortable during the treatment, so please discuss any concerns that you have with us

If you are receiving treatment through your private medical insurance company, you must contact them for approval prior to booking an appointment. Please take your membership number and authorisation code (if applicable) to the consultation/first treatment
